Finally, it was built in the “sky under the clouds “.
The Maglič (the term “town” in medieval Serbia had a completely different meaning and referred to the fort) was built on a steep cliff only 150 meters above the river, one of the western sides of Stolovi. It was built at the very rough terrain, surrounded with the river on three sides, and it is available only on the west side for pedestrians. It is a real adventure climbing up to the Maglič. You expect the narrow paths, steep cliffs, hanging bridge…
Looking from the bottom, it seems almost unattainable, as a royal crown made of stone on the top of big rock.

The Maglič is one of about two hundred similar towns of medieval Serbia but there are certainly some things making him special and exceptional. Many people consider the Maglič a classic example of Serbian medieval military architecture. The Maglič survived all tribulations and wars probably due to its inaccessibility and its main function is protection the road along the gorge that connects the two church headquarters: Žiča and with the Patriarchate of Peć and the whole Raška area from enemy attacks from the north. However, its main function was to control and protect monasteries Žica and Studenica. The Maglič is located on the twentieth kilometer south of the Kraljevo.

It is still unkown who and when was the founder of the Maglič. It is probably founded in the first half of the 13th century, but the first written data about him are from the 1337th in the Archbishop Daniel’s writings. There are many theories but two are the most acceptable. According to the one theory, the Maglič was founded by the Stefan the First-Crowned and by the second theory it was founded by Jerina (Irina), Despot Djuradj Brnaković wife, known as the Prokleta Jerina (Bloody Jerina).
The Maglič has unusual shape, completely adapted to the terrain where it is built. There are seven towers, about ten meters high and a central tower “donžon”, which is two times higher than the others and represents the highest point of the fortress. “Donžon” tower is common characteristic of all medieval cities and had an observation function.
The total area inside the fortress is about 2000 m2. The Maglič is, so to say, converted to a two courtyards: the east and west, but inside there are building remains: the Church of St. George, patron and protector of the city as well as the great palace which is considered to be, by some people, the Major Palace and by the rest people archbishops palace.
The Maglič is surely one of the most magnificent medieval Serbian towns and one of the few preserved although at first sight would not be said regarding to the currently stage of disrepair and neglect. It must be renewed and revitalized in order to preserve cultural heritage and tourism development because it has a truly large potential and fully independent and sustainable tourism value.

Author: Miroslav Bronzic
Photos: Fabian Vendrig and Zoran Sretenović

Once upon a time there was a Serbian King Uroš I who planted lilacs in the valley of the Ibar River along its gorge as a love sign for his beloved, a Serbian queen Ellen from the French town Anjou, known as a Jelena Anžujska, to feel confortable like at home.

[8
95,48,159
